Rods, chains, furlongs and acres
« on: August 08, 2011, 02:48:11 PM »
Just been checking on wiki-know-it-all-pedia and;

An acre is one furlong by one chain, or one furlong by four rods, or 10 square chains, hence;

A furlong is 10 chains and a chain is 4 rods

So there you go ;)

 ???
What possible use is that at 40m ?

you forgot to work it out for us to understand easily-
a chain = 66 feet (Gunters)
and a rod = 16.25 feet
and a furlong = 660 feet or 10 chains or 40 rods

so in laymans terms -
1 acre is 43560 sq feet or 4047 sq meters
or 660 feet x 66 feet
Now I can visualise an acre.
:)

An American tourist asks:
 "Why do Scuba divers always fall backwards off their boats?"

To which the diver replies:
 "If we fell forwards we'd still be in the fuckin’ boat."

Sorry JT, Nick forgot to point out that an acre is 4,840 square yards. Hopefully that clears up any lingering concerns you may have regarding these extremely valuable units of measure.
 :) ;D

Since a Rod is the same as a Pole and a Perch - the last of these is a hint that it must be a fishing rod, Mick.

On the other hand....... a nuclear fuel rod is around 4m long.
So there are approx 50 Uranium rods to a furlong.

Regarding Micks B&Q chain comment... the minimum you can buy is 1m.
So there are 20.11 B&Q chains to a Gunter Chain.

This is getting very silly
