Being conveniently at the airport I've made a few enquiries to see if there are any alternative carriers for us but Thomas Cook are the only ones flying to Sharm on the days we need.

Not sure why Monarch have dropped the route as it's one of the busiest there is. Jet2 have just started flying to Sharm too as there is so much demand. However, it's not necessarily a bad thing. Last time I went out there the same thing happened. The small airline we were booked on went bust (in fact TB had no idea about it until I phoned to tell them) and we had to swap flights to Monarch. They were the worst flights I've ever been on - poor times and very cramped seats.

Our flight times weren't exactly the best this time round either, so hopefully the move to Thomas Cook will be worth a few quid extra.

Anyway, it's fine by me and Yas - we're not missing this trip!

JTs are in the Phillipines so I have been 'promoted' to trip co-ordinator. Thanks for letting me know Mark. All on trip are confirmed as OK with the surcharge.

Lets hope this is the final hurdle we have to cross!!

Might introduce myself if I see you lingering around T1 in a couple of weeks :)

Cheers
Nick

The flight times are absolutely pants! Unfortunately we have no alternative - nobody else is flying to Sharm from Manchester on a Saturday. The late arrival is not a great issue as there's not much to do before the boat sets sail anyway, but we're going to have a very long last day waiting to get home.

Anyway, nothing to be done about it so little point being annoyed.

The southern Monarch flight details remain the same.
It is just the Manchester Monarch flight that is changed.
Hope clear now

I was at LIDS today and stopped off at Scuba Travel to have a chat and to also voice my unhappiness at the increase. The woman I spoke to was very apologetic about the price hike and empathised with me or was it patronised?  :-\  She spoke about the ?3 million scuba travel lost last year finding new flights for those that were affected by Xcel (sp) going bust, sadly I struggled to empathise with their dillema.

So I guess us that live up north should be telling the suvverners "Ay up its Grim up North"  ;D

BTW I am an exiled Londoner

monarchs newsletter
« Reply #12 on: March 30, 2009, 07:50:26 AM »
Following on from Yazzyfootys remarks.............
I recieve Monarchs newsletter in my email and note they have 2 million discounted seats on offer.

I suggested they compensate those inconvenienced by cancelled routes rather than offer cheaper seats.

I am not expecting an answer from Monarch enclosing compensation, as just by their 'send feedback' button,
there is a note saying "............we cannot guarantee every comment will recieve an individual answer".

Thats customer service for you!!

Cheers

Given that it's now costing us well in excess of ?100 each to fly from Manchester now Yas and I are making enquiries about flying from Gatwick instead - we suspect it will work out cheaper.

We'll get back to you with the results.

I sent every name I could find on the board of Monarch an email winging about the situation......... I actually got a reply as follows.

""ah ha !    That's  a curious one,  as you are actually the customer of Tony Backhurst's own Tour Operation (I see he operates under his own ATOL Licence), so you are not actually a "customer" in the contractual sense,  of Monarch Airlines, but I can expand on what happened here,  although I can give you no comfort in terms of the additional costs incurred by you - albeit generously shared by your Tour Operator.........

Charter aircraft only go anywhere if they have sufficient passengers,  and the MAN/Sharm was simply not making the load factors to make it a viable proposition for the various different operators that had chartered seats on this service.  None of them was achieving the level of sales that they individually anticipated,  and all wanted to reduce their capacity / exposure on this route.  This left the aircraft with insufficient charterers to support its operation,  and the series was cancelled.   Monarch Airlines was left with an aircraft to reposition and to market to the Tour Operators,   and the Operators that had been forced to dump their allocations on the MAN/SSH Saturday service have switched their customers to Gatwick,  or to the Thursday service,  thereby consolidating their programmes onto other aircraft that have been selling better,  and are likely to operate with the required load factors.

Its not so much a matter for Monarch Airlines,  as the various Operators that have chartered the aircraft,  but we do recognise that changing flight times,  and cancelled routes can be very disruptive and upsetting for all concerned.

I hope that this does clarify the background for you a bit.

Kind regards""
