I'm Alive!
« on: August 07, 2011, 05:49:05 PM »
Thankyou so much to everyone on the boat on Saturday.  I don't remember a lot, but Naomi tells me that you were all fantastic...  I was amazed when I saw the documentation photocopied in my medical notes - photocopied from a dive slate!

So, after chest x-ray and head CT scan... I had a cerebral air anneurism, which stopped blood from getting to my brain.  Caused, most likely I am told, by a small rupture in my lung wall allowing air to escape into my blood stream.  I must have not breathed out sufficiently when moving up in the water at some point.

I had 5 and 3/4 hrs in hyperbaric deco chamber yesterday, and then on return of symptoms this morning another 2 1/2 hrs today.  I have now been allowed to leave, and stay in a hotel next door to the hospital - incase I need to return.

I can't thank you all enough, I am really lucky to have been out with such a sound crew.

Anyway, I have no phone, and am using the hotel computer to let you all know what the crack is.  I believe that JT has a temporary number for me.  ...Oh and JT - I will be watching eBay for my gear!  I'll drop round this week to settle up with you re boat.

Cheers again everyone.
Si x

"Why do Scuba divers always fall backwards off their boats?"

To which the diver replies:
"If we fell forwards we'd still be in the fuckin’ boat."

Brilliant news for you and Naomi, hope they let you go and you are able to come home soon. I did resist taking photos of your ascent into the Sea King, but I am glad somebody got some. By the way the RNLI shop also had the dramatic pics on view in the shop by Sunday morning!!

Many thanks go to the RNLI for landing two medics on the boat before we reached the Harbour, to the HM Coastguards who co-ordinated the whole thing both on the radio and in the harbour, the lovely harbourmaster, ambulance  and RAF search and rescue chaps who did their thing as only they can.

And finally----- many thanks to William Shiel who got Simon back to the harbour and the rest of us back in the boat and out diving again

Thanks sijomon, the 3rd article is more detailed than the other two.
Cheers

Great to hear you're on the mend Simon. It's reassuring that everyone acted so superbly - that's what the training's for - that's why it's important to be with such a great club. Hope to see you soon Simon; take it easy.

Hi Simon - just got back from diving on William Sheil's Glad Tidings VII this weekend and he was talking about having a diver air lifted earlier in the month - I put two and two together and it led me to this thread, which I missed at the time!!! Hope you are fully recovered now......
